Berlin has more bridges than Venice, a city park roughly the size of NYC’s Central Park, and an island on the river Spree with multiple museums for easy exploration. Berlin is a happening, dynamic, and layered city whose transformation and integration since the famous wall came down is inspiring. I was there a few weeks ago, dragging myself around with a cold from hell. Yet, still, I enjoyed reacquainting myself with old landmarks and new sights. Last time I was in Berlin was 1995. Lots of the wall was still up. I brought home my own bit of graffiti rubble. Tons of the city now populated with buildings and skyscrapers was, back then, vacant lots.
This time, I stayed at The Regent, formerly a Four Seasons, attended a party hosted by Sir Rocco Forte at his Hotel de Rome, and visited uber hip Das Stue where the GM gave me all the scoop and showed me every suite.

All of these five star hotels have distinct personalities and pluses. The Regent is more classically European. The de Rome is masculine and edgy. The Das Stue is in the former Danish Embassy, very contemporary, inviting, and quirky-note crocodile sculpture below. It sits on the edge of the Tiergarten overlooking the Zoo. Just got a Michelin one star for its restaurant and Spanish chef…. With my stuffy nose, if only I could have tasted something. Anything….
As for The Regent, without my saying a word, their service is so sensitive, not only did they let me sleep 15 hours straight and completely blissful hours without disturbing or knocking on my door, they also – when they saw that I was awake, sent a white-gloved envoy to my room to deliver a heavenly and much appreciated eucalyptus bath oil to my room on a bamboo tray. No charge. Just a courtesy. Lovely service!
