The one time of year we’d say, “I don’t think so…” to a New Orleans visit is Mardi Gras. Otherwise, any time in The Big Easy is easy. There are exceptions to every rule, including NOLA native and All Aboard client Ernie Sims, who is a true insider. In that case, you know how to navigate the insanity and enjoy a unique time. Ernie and his wife Lola spent just such a visit last week celebrating the special revelry that is Mardi Gras. Lola cheered from the sidelines as Ernie tossed Mardi Gras beads from his Krewe D’etat float, a krewe voted “Best of Carnival” by critics. This is a longstanding tradition that runs in the Sims family: Ernie’s uncle was once Rex or “King of Mardi Gras.”
Asking about their favorite NOLA restaurant, the Sims have a family tradition of dining at Clancy’s – voted one of the 10 Best New Orleans Restaurants in 2017.
I’m all in for Clancy’s as long as I also make it to Galatoire’s, one of my favorites. A French Quarter institution, Galatoire’s sautéed pompano and Souffle Potatoes define heaven. (http://www.wafb.com/story/6228149/souffle-potatoes-from-galatoires)
Since Mardi Gras ends today, give the city a week or so to recover. Then, rush on down for the fabulous food and drinks. One hotel to consider with both is The Roosevelt New Orleans (a Virtuoso hotel). Now it’s part of the Waldorf Astoria group. Long time NOLA visitors may remember it as I did – The Fairmont. It’s been completely renovated post-Katrina. Concerned it would change—and not for the better, I’m delighted to report that The Roosevelt has maintained its original charm – big rooms and the famous Sazerac Bar, restored to its 1940s vibe. A short walk from the Quarter, laissez les bons temps rouler at the Roosevelt!
